HOOPS 4 HEALTH
'Hoops 4 Health' is an innovative health education development project that uses the power of basketball, one of the UK's most popular sports for young people, to make a positive impact on the health, activity habits and aspirations of young people in Liverpool.
Everton Tigers work with schools, community groups and significant partners in the health sector, to administer health & lifestyle roadshows, basketball coaching programmes and primary school basketball festivals.
'Hoops 4 Health' follows an innovative delivery framework detailed below.
The project is targeted to Year 5 pupils, and is currently being delivered in over 30 schools in South and South Central Liverpool area. Our objective is to increase the number of schools to over 120 around the city of Liverpool.
‘Hoops 4 Health’ Programme Objectives:
To encourage young people to look at how their lifestyle choices affect their health in both the long and short term.
To promote and discuss the following healthy living issues:-
Nutrition
Smoking Cessation
The importance of keeping fit and its link to a healthy heart
Introduction to basketball as a healthy sporting activity
To promote sport, and in particular basketball, as a diversionary activity.
To encourage young people to become physically active.
Detailed Programme Structure

The Hoops 4 Health roadshow afternoon incorporates four themed sessions delivered by Everton Tigers players. These sessions are fun, with educational activity focusing on healthy eating, no smoking, fitness and learning to play basketball.
Healthy Eating
The aim of the station is to discuss the different food groups based around a balanced diet, highlighting the correct number of portions to consume daily. The stations finish with a game with the children placing food items into the correct groups using a giant food map.
Smoking Cessation
The aim of the station is to deliver information to the children with facts on the number of people and children smoking in the United Kingdom and the percentage that would like to stop. The players then lead a group discussion on reasons not to smoke.
Fitness
The aim of the station is to talk about the heart and what it’s function within the body is. The player then discusses with the children the importance of exercise and the children are encourage to suggest ways this can be done. The sessions ends with a fun fitness session.
Basketball
An introduction to the game of basketball. The children are introduced to the chest pass, bounce pass, shooting technique and dribbling. An enjoyable and fun station with the emphasis on participating.
SPORTS ENTERPRISE CHALLENGE
This is a programme aimed at Years 10 to 12 to :
1. enhance learning opportunities using professional sport as a thematic vehicle.
2. provide industry knowledge of the sport & leisure sector to improve opportunity for employment or entrepreneurial activity
3. To increase aspirational attitudes amongst students of all abilities.
— To deliver an enterprise project using an actual Everton Tigers game as the vehicle for:
— Enhancing the delivery of the National Curriculum
— Assisting schools in meeting their target to offer 5 days or equivalent of enterprise education for Key Stage 4 pupils (Davies Review)
— To enhance the development of Key Skills and the delivery of the Citizenship curriculum
— To facilitate and encourage links between education and business
— To develop awareness of business activities and enterprise including finance, business planning, sales and marketing, administration
— To improve pupil motivation and aspirations
— The programme lasts between 4 and 8 weeks, and focuses on the 5 key operational elements of:

The programme can be accredited through the Understanding Business & Enterprise ASDAN Award providing 3 transferable credits.
It has a clear aim of improving pupils employability prospects and work based skills and helps eencourage the take up of further education places
KNIFE AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS
A joint co-operation with the Liverpool Youth Offending Service (YOS), Royal Liverpool University Hospital, SAMM (Support After Murder & Manslaughter), and former offenders, helps show young people that knives put them in danger and have a devastating impact on the community and the victim.
The eight week programme presents youths with:
An ex-offender who has been convicted of knife crime, talking about the consequences of his actions
A nurse from Royal Liverpool University hospital showing real life images of horrific knife injuries
Mothers who have lost children through crime showing devastating impact it has had on their lives
The Everton Tigers players and coaches supplement this programme with a mentoring and a series of basketball coaching which help keep the young people enagged with the more serious message.
A film 'My Knife Story' produced by YOS shows the programme and follows the journey of a young person who takes part in the scheme, and how it changed their views.
Councilor Marilyn Fielding, Liverpool's executive member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: "This pioneering project is changing attitudes, reducing re-offending and making Liverpool even safer.
EVERTON TIGERS BASKETBALL ACADEMY
The Everton Tigers deliver a Basketball Academy as part of Childwall Sports College’s A level programme.

Pupils train for up to 12 hours per week with Tigers coach Tony Garbelotto and current players including Centre Chris Haslam.
Garbelotto, Director of the Basketball Academy, said: "Everton Tigers want to work with Childwall by looking for the stars of the future, attract the top young talent from the region to train to a professional level via the Academy.
"This is an incredible opportunity for any young player who shows commitment and will complement their studies as well as developing their athletic abilities."
Childwall Sports College offers courses for 16 to 19- year-olds including GCSE and A-Level studies as well as NVQ, Intermediate and Level 3 courses.
Adrian Whiteley, Deputy Headteacher at Childwall Sports College, said: "The Tigers Academy allows students to focus on developing their basketball skills alongside their studies.
"It enhances the opportunities offered to pupils when they complete this stage of their education. At Childwall, we are proud of the success of our sixth form education and we believe that any young person who attends the Academy will be getting the very best academic resource in the Merseyside region."
BASKETBALL COACHING & BASKETBALL SCHOOL CAMPS
The Everton Tigers offer a range of bespoke coaching camps for schoolchildren of all ages.
These mainly run during the school holidays and are an excellent forum for students to be in a safe environment, and learn many basketballs skills, and experience the high level coaching talent of the Everton Tigers players and coaches.
